The homestead beekeeper knows there is no better form of self reliance than keeping a colony or two of these wonderful insects around. They not only provide a nourishing food packed with health benefits and nutrition, but bees also provide excellent pollination for your garden and orchard. Think far more abundant harvest year after year.

But Bee Aware…

Sorry for the pun, but just like caring for any other critter on your homestead, the amount of information you will need to know would fill an entire website by itself. But hopefully this article will give you an idea of what beekeeping entails.

Benefits of Beekeeping

1. Fresh, raw honey. Naturally, that’s the main reason people keep bees. If you’ve never had fresh, raw honey, you have no idea of the treat that’s in store for you. Honey you buy at the store has usually been processed, until it’s nothing but sugar and no nutrients. But raw honey is different, with a ton of health benefits, from giving you natural energy to helping with allergies.

2. Pollination of your garden and orchard. More bees mean more pollination and a far more productive garden.

3. It’s fun. Bees are fascinating little insects that stick together like…well…honey. They work together as a whole, and each bee has its own role – and place – in society. Learning about them – and working with them – can be addictive.

The Downsides

Work with bees long enough and you will get stung, sometimes more than once if you make your little colony mad. It might be wise to keep an anaphylactic kit on hand in case you or someone you know has a severe reaction to a bee sting (or several).

Also, not everyone is thrilled at the prospect of a colony of bees nearby. If someone in your family has an excessive fear of bugs, keeping a bee hive might not be wise.

You should let your neighbors know you are keeping bees, especially if you live in the city. Occasional gifts of honey will hopefully warm them to the idea of the little buzzers. If you are within city limits, you will also need to check your city ordinance to find out what laws – if any – apply to beekeeping in the suburbs.

And finally, be aware that your hive will need some time and attention. Expect to devote approximately 40 hours per colony each season to your bee hive.

What You Will Need

At the time this was written (2008), the supplies you need will cost about $400 in American dollars. In addition, a honey extractor will run about $350 to $400.

Here are some of the basics that you will need:

A hive box or hive kit

Hive tool

Smoker

Bee Suit

An anaphylactic kit

Bees

The Most Important Thing

And finally, you will need time. Bee prepared! (Last pun, I promise!) Bee keeping can be a time-consuming hobby. You must be interactive with your bees. Check your hive at least once a week and keep a log of what you observe. That way you will learn what’s normal for your bees and when they need special attention, such as medication for mites.

Why Einstein said that : ” If the bee diappeared …., then man would only have four years of life left ” ?

The honey bee is a major pollinator of many of our food
crops, almonds, apples, avocados, blueberries, cantaloupes
, cherries, cranberries, cucumbers, sunflowers, watermelon and many other crops all rely on honey bees for pollination.

So if honey bees disappear and we do not find replacements that can do the work they do then foods that we take for granted will decrease in supply and increase in price.

The main reason that the honey bees is important for our world is as simple as this; if the honey bee does not pollinate the crops, the crops do not grow and produce the food that gets harvested and brought to the store where we buy it and bring it home to feed ourselves and our families.

In other words there is a direct connection between the bees pollinating the crops and our ability to provide food for our families.

No one can pin a date on when humans learnt to cultivate bees for their honey. Neither can anyone say for sure when man learnt that honey can be consumed. Perhaps man observed the bears and other animals in the trees pursuing honey bee hives and taking the honey from it and eating it. And as always man – following his ‘monkey see, monkey do’ instinct tried it out for taste and discovered that honey had a unique sweet taste of its own.

All this probably happened around 700 years before Christ. We can fix this date by the drawings on the caves where prehistoric man lived. It is not difficult for scientists to fix dates on caves based on radio carbon dating of skins and bones along with other organic remnants found in the cave. However, scientists seem to think that the drawings depicted on the walls of the caves tell tales of humans standing around a bee hive and are absolutely unaffected by the bees. Could this mean that they had discovered some pre-historic ‘Bee Go’ to ward off the bees. Bee Go is a chemical that bee keepers smear on a tray and leave it in the hive to encourage the bees to move to the bottom of the hive.

Man might have discovered that smearing some similar substance on their bodies would prevent the bees from stinging them while they collected the honey from the hive. What is a fact is, however, that man did learn that smoke was a very useful tool in scaring the bees away from the hive while they dismantled it from the tree. This was no guarantee of not getting stung though.

As civilization progressed man learnt to cultivate the honey bee. First indications of bee keeping are the clay and mud pottery scientists have found. Artificial bee hives had been constructed out of clay pottery to encourage bees to build their hives in them. When the honey was ready for harvesting the bees were driven out and the pot was broken to remove the honey.

Swarms of bees were trapped in these containers and kept there captive. Once they decided to make the hive their home the bees were allowed to come and go as they pleased making honey in the process.

Time advanced and so did the human intelligence. Man began to study the habits of bees and made uniquely designed hives for the honey bee. These wooden hives as we know them today are engineered to keep the reproduction part of the hive away from the food (larder) section. This way the bee keeper can only remove the honey combs without disturbing the off spring at the same time not having to remove all the bee’s food.
